Ani wa inu o kowa-garimasu.
My big brother is scared of dogs.
Kodomo ga atsugatte imasu.
My child is feeling hot.
Yasai wa iyagaranai de tabenasai.
Don’t hate vegetables. Eat them.
garu is also needed for describing the third person’s desire. The direct object should be marked by the particle o rather than the particle ga because garu creates a verb. For example:
Sutbu-san wa kuruma o hoshi-gatte imasu.
Steve wants a car.
Sutbu-san wa eiga o mi-ta-gatte imasu.
Steve wants to see a movie.
